Why We Chant OM In My Classes

Chanting OM starts out as a means, or a way, for you to begin your mind, body, spirit focus and connection - temporarily letting go of your day, giving yourself permission to BE.  To just BE for the whole class.

Then in time, with increased interest and dedication to your practice, when you begin to connect to the subtle energy in your body and your yoga practice is a priority.  Suddenly when you chant OM the association of the word and your practice is so deep that just chanting the sound of OM can have the same mental affects that you get from your physical yoga practice.

You sort of develop a pavlov affect to the word, and once you chant it, you completely relax, your whole body starts to tingle and your third eye pulses, you begin and end your class in a state of bliss.

As a teacher I want to facilitate the opportunity for you to build that connection, and to feel that experience.

OM - is the symbol for the sound of creation which never ceases.  Out of it emerged creation.  In it’s vibration everything is contained.

OM,

Colleen

1/2 teaspoon turmeric

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

1 1/4 cups water

1 cup coconut milk

Rinse and drain the rice. In a saucepan on medium -high heat, saute the rice, turmeric, and salt in the oil for a minute or two, stirring constantly.  Add the water and coconut milk, bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat to low.  Simmer until the rice is tender and the liquid absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes.

West Indian Red Beans

1 1/2 cups diced onions

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes or 1 fresh chile, minced

1 15-oz can of diced tomatoes

1 28-oz and 1 15-oz can of red kidney beans, drained

chopped scallions and/or cilantro

While the rice is cooking, in a saucepan on medium heat, saute the onions in the oil for 3 or 4 minutes.  Add the red pepper flakes, sprinkle lightly with salt, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft, 5 to 8 minutes.  Add the thyme, allspice, tomatoes, and beans, cover, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve the red beans on a bed of the rice and top with scallions and/or cilantro
